Architecture and Interior Design Projects
African Satellite School Competition
In Collaboration with Nada Shuaib, Nifemi Onabanjo, Haime Hailu
This design understands that the school is the
community’s shared property that is protected and celebrated
as a second home for its students.
In the process of developing the design, flexibility and adaptability were influential design drivers that inspired a 50 square meter module approach. This module is the core design element that can be replicated, adapted, and easily constructed to meet the community’s educational needs. Its size, materiality and simple constructability allow the adoption of this module in the sites with different scales, needs, and limitations.
Navigating Contextualism
An architectural and urban design study at the intersection of climate, culture, urban development, and globalization
Case Study of Dire Dawa
This thesis investigates architectural typologies that have dominated the world especially in the context of Ethiopia. It critiques the de-contextual nature of the modernist and related typologies through the lens of climate, socioeconomic
fabric, and urban design. It then focuses on Dire Dawa University, located in the eastern part of Ethiopia, by investigating the authenticity, functionality, and
contextuality of the architectural designs as well as their relationship with the people, urban landscape, and culture. Finally it provides design interventions that mitigate the climate related problems through local solutions.
Bridging the Gap
A participatory approach in architecture and urban planning
Case study of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
This historical analysis of Addis Ababa shows that most of the public has had no voice in the various plans of development. I argue that the lack of
community engagement and public participation has ignited severe ethnic conflicts and resulted in widespread human displacements. Therefore, by
understanding the lack of public engagement, this study set out to engage with the public intending to identify their basic needs and other preferences.
To do so, this study performed research through surveying and site analysis. By doing so, it collected a set of data that represented the public’s voice and various demands. Finally, this study provides a design proposal that illustrates how a thoughtful process can bridge the gap between government planning and human need to arrive at better housing solutions.
